Athlete Qualities

Sprinting Speed & Flexibility

The most important element in skeleton pushing success is sprinting speed combined with hip & back flexibility. The ability to run and accelerate fast while being bent over is paramount to pushing the sled fast.

Maximal Strength and Power

These athletes aren’t just running by themselves, they’re pushing a 28-40kg sled. This means that the athletes must have good explosive strength and the ability to transfer power well.

Physical size

Skeleton athletes come in various sizes. While height is not neccesarily a factor, body size is. Our sport is based on aerodynamics and those that are more slender will traditionally have a more aerodynamic profile. Many skeleton athletes have had to work hard to reduce their upper body size as their sliding careers developed.

Commitment to the Program

This is the most important component. We have recruited many athletes over the years, and some of them will simply disappear. It is the athletes with the greatest commitment level to the mental/physical training and financial cost that eventually compete for Canada in the World Championship and Olympic Games. The world and life experiences that awaite those wanting to represent Canada in sport are life-long and worth the hard work.
