An athlete will likely not be eligible to receive government-level funding until he/she has reached the National Development Team level (Europa Cup / Intercontinental Cup)
Funding for first year athletes
It is important to note that almost all first year athletes in our programs struggle with the time commitment and the amount of funding available. Below are some of the options available to first year athletes to help close the funding gap:
1. Personal sponsorship/funding – Many new athletes preparing for their first competitive skeleton season are able to cultivate some financial support in their community. They hold fundraisers, receive donations from local businesses.
2. Community or club grants/endowments – Many provinces have specific funds for junior-level athletes that reside or were born in that specific province. It is recommended that each athlete researches and identifies possible grant opportunities.
Funding for National Development Athletes
Sport Canada Carding – Carding is a funding source for BCS National Team athletes. The BCS Carding cycles are as follows:
- July 1st – Athletes that participated in the previous season’s World Championships are eligible for carding starting on July 1st. This is in $900 or $1500 per month amounts
- Nov. 1st – First year athletes or athletes that did not participate in the previous seasons World Championships are eligible to be receiving carding if the qualify through the On-Ice Selection Races. The most a first year athlete can receive is $900 per month. There are very few cards available at this time, so only the top qualifiers will receive it.
- It is important to read and understand the BCS carding criteria. This will be provided to you at a National team training camp in June, August or October.
